• "The Lives of Things" conference, organized by the Object Cultures Project within the Chicago Center for Contemporary Theory (3CT), marks the 25th anniversary of the publication of The Social Life of Things, and the impact of Arjun Appadurai’s introduction to that volume of essays. Concerned with more than a retrospective, we are interested in how the impact of his “methodological fetishism” (along with the conceit that commodities have social lives) has converged with, or diverged from, the subsequent impact of Bruno Latour’s understanding of object agency or Deleuze and Guattari’s materialist vitalism; we are also interested in the ways in which subsequent research has refined the insights provided by that book.

Sponsored by 3CT, the Franke Institute, the Department of Anthropology Lichtstern Conference Fund, the Division of the Humanities, the Division of the Social Sciences, the Department of English Language and Literature, the Karla Scherer Center for the Study of American Culture, the Smart Museum, and the Department of Art History.
